College Connections Cawaii announces Furlough Friday Tutoring to support students, families, and teachers

October 13, 2009

College Connections Hawaii is now offering Furlough Friday tutoring at selected Honolulu locations to help continue providing educational opportunities for Hawaii’s public school students during the economic recovery period.

With teacher furloughs set to begin on October 23, many parents are worrying publicly that the lost of instructional days will hinder student achievements.  The decrease of school days also means a lack of income for teachers.  To lessen the negative effects of Furlough Fridays on students, families and teachers, College Connections will offer morning tutoring sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and afternoon sessions from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sessions will be taught by certified teachers and College Connections is still hiring for the current school year.

These special Furlough Friday tutoring sessions will be held at the College Connections office located at 320 Ward Avenue, Suite 210, as well as other locations to will be announced.  Lunch will be included with each session.

Especially in the face of budget cuts and teacher furloughs, College Connections is determined to ensure Hawaii’s students do not lose out on opportunities to reach their educational goals.  Kina Mahi, Executive Director of College Connection Hawaii said, “We ALL need to band together to help.  At College Connections, we believe partnerships are the best answer.  We work with more than 60 schools to offer free tutoring for those in need.  We’re committed to partnering with schools and youth organizations to ensure Hawaii students are ready for higher education, professional success, and community leadership.”
