FAQ

Why is the SAT important?

More than two million students take this test every year, and almost all colleges and universities accept this test as part of the admissions process.  The SAT is a factor for most college admissions, but it is not the only factor.  Like anything, hard work can improve your chances of doing well on this test.

What is the goal of College Connections SAT preparation classes?

Practice, practice, PRACTICE!   Our class will help you go into the SAT knowing what to expect, how to manage four-hours of timed testing, and how to use test-taking strategies that will improve your score.  We hope this class will help you improve in school and on all tests, not just the SAT.

When and where are classes offered?

Classes are held in our office or at various school locations. College Connections keeps our classes small, so our instructors can spend individualized time with students. Some classes run every day for two weeks, and other classes spread out instruction over several weeks.

We are always open to partnering with schools to offer low-cost SAT classes on your campus.  If you are an educator or school personnel, please contact us to set up a class.

How will I know if SAT test prep works?

In the College Connections SAT class, you will take a pre-test, mid-test, and post-test.  These full-length exams will provide you with valuable practice and help gauge your improvement.  Of course, the best way to measure improvement and results is by taking the actual SAT.

How do I get my child into a free Test Preparation Class?

If you live on Hawaii Island, Hawaii Community College has generously supported free classes for the past three years.  For other islands, we are working to bring more affordable classes to your schools.

Can I get help paying for the SAT?

If your family income is below a certain level, your school or College Connections may be able to provide you with a fee waiver for the SAT.  Fee waivers will also reduce most college application fees.

Why is the COMPASS important?

If you are planning to go to community college, doing well on the COMPASS can save you money and time.  If you are able to place out of remedial math and English, you can enroll in classes that count for credit and will transfer to a four-year college or university.

How is the COMPASS different?

The COMPASS is not a pencil and paper test.  The COMPASS is given as a computer adaptive test that adjusts its questions based on how you do.  When you answer questions right, the test increases the difficulty of the next question.  Knowing what kind of questions you will get will help you manage your time, remain calm during the test, and get a better score.

GENERAL FAQs

Who does College Connections serve?

Our doors are open to all students in Hawaii, and we make every effort to work with students who seek our help.  We also reach out to students who are first in their family to attend college or who are from traditionally underrepresented populations.

Where is College Connections?

Our office is located in Honolulu on Ward Avenue, but the heart and soul of College Connections is in our schools and communities.  Almost all of our program activities are offered in schools—where our students spend most of their days, and where our educators are working to give students the best opportunities.

How is College Connections different?

All College Connections services are based on the personal connection between an adult and a child, a teacher and student, a mentor and youth.  Because we believe this is one of the foundations of successful education and promising future, we place the highest importance on our one-on-one relationships.

Is College Connections affiliated with colleges?

We are most interested in helping students find a higher education opportunity that suits their passions, talents, and goals.  We focus on helping students find schools that fit them, and that will help them succeed.  We do work to strengthen relationships with college admissions representatives, both at home in Hawaii and on the mainland.

If College Connections is a nonprofit, why aren’t all services free?

We believe education is an investment a student makes in his or her future.  We ask students and their families to pay a small amount for most educational services, but are committed to access and affordability for all.

What are the goals of College Connections?

College Connections envisions a Hawaii where all students have higher education opportunities, regardless of background or circumstances.
